e66 iwaA group of 20 cyclists participated in the 2016 Safari Den Winter Tour. Safari Den was the main sponsor of this tour which was successfully hosted over four days, from 4 – 7 May 2016.

The tour kicked off with a launch, held at the Safari Den deck in the Auas Valley Shopping Mall, on the 3rd of May, a day before the tour commenced. During the launch, Johan Fourie, the tour organiser gave some insights of the tour, where he shared details of the distance to be covered, available support and safety precautions. At the same time, the bicycle riders and back teams received their items for the cycle, including branded jackets, goodie bags and refreshments for the tour.

The official event started off in the early morning of 4 May, when the cyclists departed from Windhoek via the Dan Viljoen road (C28) to Gross Barmen, for the first stretch of 125 km. The second day was the longest distance covered, when the group cycled 130 km from Okahandja to Wilhelmstal.

On the last day of the tour, 7 May, the riders cycled a distance of 60 km from Omaruru to Erindi Game Reserve.

On each day of tour, there was a water point on the half-way mark of each tour route. These water points were manned by Agra staff members, where cyclists could take a breather and enjoy cold drinks and fresh fruits.

Johan Fourie reported that he was impressed by the cyclists and everyone did exceptionally well. “The riders were challenged with some rough and undulating terrain and extreme heat, but have all endured. The tour was held in good spirit and everyone enjoyed the outdoors,” he proudly said.
